"I’ve started to pay close attention to the situation of Covid-19 in China till now  since January. The exposure to those news desensitizes me gradually. I still  feel sorrow, but I have no tears to cry.
Days ago, I saw people posting “candle emoji” to mourn those who died from  the virus. I followed and also typed a “candle emoji”, but then I deleted it. I  worried that I would become more dull in the process of emotion-cloning and  lose more empathy from the action of copy-and-paste.
When we can not get close enough to hear each other’s breath, when many  physical things have turned virtual, I want to feel something real. At the least,  I want to watch the wick turning black millimeter by millimeter, wax oil melting,  and flame shaking because of the wind blown through the living room  window, until it burns my palm." - Joy Li
Joy Li is an interdisciplinary artist working with film, performance art, theater and sculpture. She was born in 1999 in Gansu, China. In 2021, she will receive her BA degree in Interdisciplinary Sculpture with a Theater minor at Maryland Institute College of Art. Li has already been included in various important exhibitions including “Communication Strategies: From Checkers to Complex Systems” at Time Art Museum, Sichuan, China, and “Redirecting” at Tree Art Museum, Beijing, China. She has had a solo exhibition at the Gateway Gallery in Baltimore, MD. In 2020, her first theatrical production “Collective Dreaming” was shown in BBOX, MD, and it has been written about by Laurence Ross in BmoreArt.
